I’m not a “Windows” person, so I usually keep my mouth shut about things that only marginally enter my work, that I don’t care about, and that I never admit any knowledge abou – but I think there is something worth mentioning. Maybe microsoft had some kind of “reset” in mind with the windows update, I don’t know what criteria they were using to decide which files had to go, but to do it without the consent of the users or administrators is seriously bad. And that’s fine if that’s their desired policy, but there will obviously be data loss for many applications. Some administrators might choose to delete/re-init data from Local and Roaming in order to reset user profiles every time they log in because they want user sessions to remain stateless. You can’t just delete this willy nilly and not expect lots of things to break.

The tests are not definitive, both MSE and Symantec have slightly different advantages. If both are free (many companies or ISPs offer Symantec for free), then it's really up to you. If price is a concern, MSE is the way to go, since it's free. MSE has slightly fewer false positives, Symantec has somewhat more, but still well in the low part of the range. Symantec is better at detecting stuff that is already known. Both are in PDF format, so be warned if you don't like clicking PDF links.īasically, MSE has the edge in detecting new infections that are not already in the database, meaning it probably has a better heuristic engine.
